English teachers are provided with every possible opportunity to attend professional development courses in line with the English department strategic plan and appraisal systems. Teachers who do so are expected to report back to the department so others can benefit. Full use is made of advisers or consultants where appropriate.

English teachers have access to the publications and services of a number of professional associations including NZATE, AATEL, NZADIE and NAME. Professional magazines and newsletters are available for teachers to read.

The English Department has a collection of professional resources for teachers, including texts on reading, literacy, media, linguistics, learning styles, accelerated learning, critical works on literature etc.

There is a manual outlining the programme of advice and guidance provided by the English Department for beginning teachers. All beginning teachers receive a copy of this. The English Department meets the school's requirements in terms of beginning teachers.
